Types of Bank Holidays in India 2026

Banks in India observe holidays based on the Negotiable Instruments Act (1881) and RBI notifications. There are generally three types of bank holidays in India:

1. National (All-India) Holidays

These are observed by all banks across India:

  • Independence Day: 15 August
  • Gandhi Jayanti: 2 October

These are gazetted bank holidays and apply nationwide.

2. Regional / State-Specific Holidays

Many festivals (for example - Holi, Eid, Diwali) are regional holidays and banks in specific states observe them according to local significance. These dates vary from state to state.
